Two Galesburg bars in violation of liquor ordinance

Galesburg police officers doing bar checks in the early hours of Sunday found that two downtown bars were in violation of the city’s liquor ordinance.

At around 12:50, officers detected a burnt cannabis smell coming from the Uptown Bar and Grill. While investigating they found a female patron to be smoking inside the premises.

According to police reports, officers informed Steven A. Coleman II, the bar’s owner, of the violation. According to the reports, he told officers that he couldn’t control what patrons did. He was informed that if patrons were smoking in the bar, he would be held responsible for the violation.

Officers also noted that a male security guard working at the front door was drinking an alcoholic beverage – another violation of the city ordinance.

Later, just after 2:00 a.m. officers inside of Seminary Street Pub observed bartenders pouring shots to patrons after the scheduled cutoff of liquor sales.

Police reports indicate both establishments will be going before the Liquor Control commission for review.
