Art of India gives kids relief from wintertime blues

Without leaving the frozen Midwest area students have the opportunity to heat up their creative instincts and learn about the world.
Galesburg Civic Arts Center Director Tuesday Cetin says the educational value of the Center’s Kids’ Month is two-fold in that kids learn different methods of art but also are exposed to different cultures.

She tells WGIL that each year they choose a theme that has to do with a culture or geographical location.

“Every civilization has art but those with bright colors can really engage kids in learning, not only what they’re doing as far as art but also the cultural part of any country or culture that we focus on,” Cetin says.

Past themes have included the art of New Orleans and Sub-Saharan Africa.

This year it’s the art of India that will be featured, with elementary students making things like rangoli, kites and pinch pots.

Those times for elementary students will be 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Junior high students will have more advanced workshops every Saturday at noon.
All the events are free and registration is not required.
