Rotary Park ice skating open to public

Five years of fundraising, almost a year of construction and almost six months waiting for water to freeze and now Galesburg residents can ice skate.

The City of Galesburg announced Tuesday that the rink at Rotary Park was open.

Residents are invited during park hours when weather permits to lace up their skates and go to the park in between Losey and Spruce.

A City news release says that a red flag will be posted on the skating sign when use of the rink is prohibited.

Of course, skaters should take care when being out in temps and wind chills that have often recently been 15 below and colder but there’s a warming station and fire pit nearby.

The public should remember to bring their own fire wood and skates.

The rink and all of the newer features at Rotary were made possible by $440,000 in fundraising the Galesburg Rotary Club did along with a $330,000 grant from a state grant.

The park now also has a splash pad for kids on hot days, a walking trail that circles the park and playground equipment.
