“Unofficial” warming facilities available to those unable to escape the cold.

Forecasted temperatures through the upcoming weekend may reach double digits during the day – but not by much.

Thursday and tomorrow Friday will be the “warmest” days of this week with temperatures reaching only 16-17 degrees.

Nightly temperatures throughout the New Year’s weekend are projected to drop from 5 to 7 degrees below zero.

As in years passed, Galesburg Police and Fire Department personnel want to remind area residents to remain safe.

City buildings considered “unofficial” warming shelters include the public safety building and Cottage Hospital.

Both facilities are open 24 hours a day – and these buildings act as places for residents to get warm if they cannot find suitable shelter elsewhere.

During the frigid cold during last year’s winter, Galesburg Police Lt. Russ Idle told WGIL facilities like the public library and health department are also open for those in dire straights to come into.

Space heaters must be used under supervision, and nontraditional heat sources – such as a kitchen range or oven are extreme fire hazards.

Area citizens are also reminded to check on their neighbors – especially the seniors.

Make sure your family’s pets are not left outside all night – and that they still have drinkable water.
