205 makes minor adjustment to insurance plans offered

The District 205 school board met last night with one item to approve.

They voted to amend their district health plan to remove Alternative Care Plans.

Superintendent John Asplund says that currently about 11 employees were on the plan

Asplund says the removal of this variety of plans was because of Affordable Care Act rules becoming more defined in their scope.

The Galesburg Education Association, teachers union wasn’t given a great deal of notice before Asplund’s recommendation to switch insurance administrators earlier this month.

Asplund tells WGIL the union wasn’t given much notice due to the amount of research needed to determine how compliant the district still was.

“And so when it came down to where we realized… this probably fell outside of that we need to act quickly,” said Asplund. He added, “So we gave the union as much notice as we could given the legal constraints and given the contractual constraints that we had.”

A few weeks ago the district entered into an agreement with a new third party administrator for the district health plan.

Asplund says the board acted too quickly to switch when they began to feel they were out of compliance.

Still he maintains the now the plan offers employees a wider range of health options, maybe most notably the ability to now go to Cottage or OSF St. Mary hospitals.
