Galesburg Alderman revisiting monthly utility billing tonight

Galesburg Alderman will revisit an issue that was rejected earlier this year after several resident complaints.

They have on first reading tonight an ordinance that would make Galesburg billing for water and refuse a monthly bill instead of quarterly.

Council documents say that the idea behind this is making payments more manageable for residents.

In March City Manager Todd Thompson stated that almost a quarter of city water bills are paid late and that Monmouth leadership said they significantly cut down on delinquent bills by making this switch.

When this came up in March it was shot down by a 2-4 vote, with the four council members opposed largely against it due to constituent feedback and saying those paying on time “shouldn’t be punished.”

Alderman Corine Anderson had pointed out that anyone wanting to pay quarterly could simply pay their bill in advance.

Council will also consider authorizing demolition of four dilapidated properties after sending the property owners notifications requesting compliance.

Council may also approve a bid for $42,000 for two Galesburg fire facilities to have their roofs replaced.

Both the Brooks St. Fire Station and the Fire Training Facility were damaged in a hailstorm earlier this year.
