Council renames underpass after Rev. Jon Sibley

Without an objection in the chamber, the Galesburg City Council renamed the East Main Street Underpass after Rev. Jon A. Sibley Sr. Monday night. The resolution passed with all four alderman in attendance voting yes and now will go before the Illinois General Assembly.

Mayor John Pritchard who brought the resolution before the council said Sibley was an “example of the good things we should all aspire to.”

Vice President of the Galesburg NAACP Dwight White read a letter on behalf of the organization.

White said the organization was in full support of naming the underpass after Sibley, saying there’s “no question of (Sibley’s) lasting impact.”

“Last week’s outpour of support for the naming on social media is not only an amazing testament but a great reflection on how our community feels about Rev. Sibley,” White says.

White went on to say that Sibley had a “love of all people” like the founding fathers of Galesburg, who were abolitionists and “people of faith”.

Sibley’s widow Vicki was in attendance and several others spoke highly of the decision to honor the late community leader including Jim Jacobs and Alderman Wayne Allen.

The Council also amended the city code to allow organizations holding Class H liquor licenses to serve drinks outdoors.

Prairie Players Civic Theatre’s request to do so is what brought on the proposal.
