Three performances scheduled for play based on Sandburg fairy tales

Known primarily as a folk singer and poet, Carl Sandburg also wrote fairy tales for his three daughters, and this weekend three performances are scheduled for a short play based on his collection “Rootabaga Stories”

The play, with it’s name taken from the nicknames Sandburg gave to his daughters, is called “Spink, Skabootch and Swipes.” Sandburg himself saw these stories in the same light as European stories like Cinderella.

The first performance will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. at the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site located at 313 East 3rd Street in Galesburg.

The event free to the public and lemonade and cookies being served.

An additional performance will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Park Plaza in Galesburg during Railroad days.

The play, written by Lisa K. Bryant, first premiered at Flat Rock Playhouse in Flat Rock, North Caroline.

The project is funded by the G.L. Vitale Family Foundation and the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association.
