Buildings on future library site coming down

The Galesburg Public Library is planning to soon tear down three properties that are on the site on whether the future library will sit.
When you come down off of the Don Moffitt Overpass and look to your right on the corner of Main and South Academy Street you see a pair of old homes that the library owns.

Those will be demolished as well as what was formerly Crazy 8’s Bar.

The library bought Crazy 8’s in December 2015 for $125,000 expanding the land the future library will have.

Library Trustee Finance Chair at that time Guy Cahill said this would likely be the last piece of property the library would acquire for this long project.

Library Director Harriet Zipfel says the demolition is being paid for by with up to $90,000 from the library’s foundation.

That amount comes from two preliminary estimates.

“I’m sure that they have to come and actually look at the sites and look inside the buildings etc, but this is just them standing outside looking at it,” Zipfel says.

The project will have to go out to bid and Zipfel says she plans on asking for assistance from Associate Planner with the City of Galesburg, Steve Gugliotta.
