Members of Central Congregational Church wanting to deed building to City

It has been suggested that Central Congregational Church, long under stress of maintaining a historic and expensive city landmark, deed the building over to the City of Galesburg.

In a letter addressed to Mayor John Pritchard with alderman and local media receiving duplicate copies, long time church members Bob Kimble and Suzanne Klohn make the proposal.

They acknowledge the city’s interest in the past in finding a center for teen, seniors and other community uses and suggest the church as a place for it.

They suggest using the $115,000 made from the sale of the Old Fire Station and community center and now Iron Spike Brew Pub to pay for church improvements.

They also recommend selling the Broad Street Armory as is, to spare the city any further improvements.

A representative of Central Congregational said the letter from Kimble and Klohn is not an official letter from the church.

The representative also said that the church is actively seeking multiple options and they’re willing to talk to anyone interested in the building.

Central Congregational Church has been on Galesburg’s square since it was built in 1898 and is recognized as a National Historic Site.
