El Jarochito mexican restaurant growing with bigger location in Monmouth

One of Galesburg’s best kept culinary secrets is expanding into the Maple City.
El Jarochito known for serving up Mexican cuisine under a sign that still reads “Quick Sam’s” from the previous tenants isn’t leaving Academy Street in Galesburg, but is opening a larger restaurant in Monmouth.

The grand opening of El Jarochito in Monmouth is today.

The Galesburg store has been open for about four years.

Manager Rosa Moreno through a translator told WGIL that this wasn’t something they had always planned on doing but she’s excited for the expansion for many reasons.

“The thing is it’s bigger over there than here and a lot of people don’t get that opportunity to eat here for that reason,” Moreno says.

Besides more space in Monmouth they’ll have an offering of American food for breakfast but tortillas, huevos rancheros and chorizo will be available.

The breakfast addition will keep them open for longer hours from 6 a.m to 8 p.m.

Head Chef Jose Hernandez will start working in Monmouth and Antonio Flores will be in the kitchen in Galesburg.

The new restaurant will allow them to hire around ten people at 227 S. A Street about a block to the east off of south main.

They’re also planning to have a loyal card program to reward those who visit often.

Moreno says no major remodeling has been necessary, costs have more gone into decorating with paint and mariachi hats.
