Knoxville city races set up a new treasurer and one contested race

Candidate filings are in for City of Knoxville races in the spring and only one contested race will be on the ballot.
Dennis Maurer has been acting mayor since September and he’s running unopposed to pick up his first elected term in the position.

He gave up his 2nd Ward Alderman seat to take up the position after Mayor Bob Johnson resigned.

The lone contested race for Knoxville voters will be to see who fills his old seat.

Karen Benjamin was appointed to it until April, but she’ll have to fend off Timothy W. Hurley in a head-to-head race.

Knoxville will also have a new city treasurer in the spring.

Health problems have caused Treasurer Jim Whitney to decide to retire and Peg Bivens will run unopposed.

City Clerk Charlie Gruner tells WGIL Whitney was hoping for someone he could spend sometime with before handing over the treasurer keys and in Bivens he’s got it.

“He’ll turn it over to the incoming treasurer after the election and spend some time with her to make sure she knows where everything is,” Gruner says.

Gruner himself has a clear path to another term as City Clerk.

Also 1st Ward Alderman Frank Olin has decided to not run again because of health problems.

Angela S. Hillier is the lone candidate filed to run to replace him.

Toby Myers will run unopposed in Ward 3 for another term, the same for Ward 4’s Lester Naslund.

Newcomer Steven Eiker will run unopposed for a 2-year unexpired term in Ward 4.
