Winter weather advisory in effect through 6 a.m. on Sunday

Western Illinois roads are becoming icy and snow is swirling. The National Weather Service has moved up their winter weather advisory, which is in effect now through Sunday at 6 a.m.

The impeding weather caused early dismissals in District 205, 202, 235, 304 and 208, today. Most evening activities and games have been cancelled, as well. That includes tonight’s boys basketball game between Galesburg High School and Moline which will be made up on Tuesday.

Though the snow is not expected to amount to much, cold temps could make precipitation on the ground into slick spots. Even more concerning is the extreme cold expected tomorrow night. A low of seven below is predicted with wind chills dipping to 23 degrees below zero.

In an e-mail, Knox County Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Simkins says potential overnight warming centers are on stand-by, but as of right now, have not been enacted.

That facility would be First Baptist Church on South Cherry Street. The Public Safety Building, the lobby of the Knox County Jail, area hospitals and the library are current facilities residents can use to get warm.
