Sgt. Douglas Riney to be laid to rest Monday

Funeral services for a decorated American soldier from Fairview, Illinois who was killed by enemy fire in Afghanistan last week are planned for Monday.

The plane carrying Sgt. Douglas Riney’s body is set to arrive at Peoria International Airport Friday at 10 a.m.

A procession that will include fire apparatus, Illinois Patriot Guard and family members will then bring Sgt. Riney to Canton.

They’ll head west on Route 116 to Farmington, then south on Route 78 to the Murphy-Sedgwick Funeral Home.

Visitation Sunday is from 2 to 8 p.m. with a firefighter walkthrough at 4 p.m.Then the funeral on Monday 11 a.m. at Canton Evangelical Free Church at 1300 East Chestnut Street,

A fire procession will then accompany Riney’s body to Farmington where he will be laid to rest in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Mark Hanlin was a long time family friend of Riney and served along side him on the Fairview Fire Department.

Hanlin tells WGIL there’s a way that community members can give a small but strong show of support for Riney and family.

“Many people will be a long the routes and just doing their own individual thing with a flag — doing a salute as the procession passes,” Hanlin says. “So, people can do things as an individual or group to honor an American Soldier.”

Riney was awarded with such decorations as the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, four Army achievement medals and several other honors from the United States Army, Defense Department and NATO.
