Galesburg man charged for alleged theft and meth

A Galesburg man faces a felony theft count for allegedly stealing a thermal imaging camera from the Village of East Galesburg Fire Department worth more than $10,000.

Thirty-six-year-old Christopher Nickas received a $5,000 bond this afternoon in Knox County Circuit Court.

Assistant State’s Attorney Sabrina Stroops alleged that the camera was found by Galesburg police in a backpack at 772 Ella Street. A small amount of meth and drug paraphernalia items were said to be found at the residence, as well.

The seizure stems from a drug bust last week at the address where six individuals, including Nickas, were arrested in a bust that found heroin, cocaine and a small amount of marijuana.

Subsequent search warrants were issued and Nickas was arrested Monday on an additional Warren County warrant that carries a $7,500 bond of its own.

Nickas told police he purchased the camera for his construction company, but Stroops argued because of the complexity of the device, the item is not for general sale and is “typically only used by fire departments to find hot spots in fires.”

The felony theft charge carries a maximum sentence of up to 15 years in prison. He was additionally charged for unlawful possession of meth and will re-appear in court November 14th.
