Knox County Sheriff’s office could face major repairs because of water leaks

Hard rains have been drowning the Knox County Sheriff’s office.

Water has been leaking into the building around three administrative offices, soaking the carpets and flooding Sheriff Dave Clague’s office. A conference room has seen some water, as well.

The sheriff says after much investigation of the roof and ceiling, contractors discovered the leaks were coming from improperly installed windows.

The windows left holes that were covered by caulking.

“The conference room, there’s been so much leakage that the window is about ready to fall out,” Clague says. “Whenever it rains hard, I’ll say 100 percent (of the carpet) is underwater with about half an inch on top.”

Clague says his office was particularly affected, with one wall soaked and sprouting mold.

The windows have been re-installed correctly, but that’s not the end of the problem.

The sheriff says the drywall needs to be replaced and the carpets in all three offices need to be ripped out. And that’s going to cost money. A lot of money, Clague says.

The sheriff says the jail did have a leak this summer near the booking area, but he’s hoping the recent damage was contained to just the administrative areas.

The issue is expected to go before the building committee for their recommendation, but Clague wants to wait a month or two to see if any more leaks show up before starting to fix the interior problems.
