Whitcomb Art Center dedication set for Friday

Knox College will make two big announcements this Homecoming weekend, the first of which is a new building for the school.
The $8.9 million Whitcomb Art Center is set for a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony Friday at 5 p.m.

The ceremony will be held near the corner of Prairie and South streets.

Though construction is complete, Knox Vice President for Advancement Beverly Holmes told us in an August interview student’s won’t use the building until after winter.

“We won’t actually end up using the building for teaching and learning until January, the start of our second term,” Holmes said.

The facility will garner 30,000 sq. ft. and two stories. In the interview two months ago, Holmes said the building looks like none other on the Knox campus.

The art center is being named for Knox alums Joan and Dick Whitcomb who donated $5 million toward the completion.

Knox President Teresa Amott, Board of Trustees Chair Richard Riddell and Dick Whitcomb are all expected to speak at Friday’s event.

Friday will also be the unveiling of the new Knox mascot. The “fox’ mascot logo was released last month, but students have since voted on a name for the character who will make its debut.
