Shave for the Brave flying with vets, collecting messages of thanks

Shave for the Brave has been around for a little over two years, helping making it possible for veterans to fly to Washington D.C. to see the memorials of the wars they fought in and receive a hero’s welcome on their return.

$50,000 was raised by Shave for the Brave to sponsor an entire flight in 2015.

Crystal Wilson, James Purl and several others with the organization are going on the 38th Honor Flight of the Quad Cities on Oct. 27.

The trip consists of approximately 92 veterans most of them from the Knox County area, including a pair that fought in World War II and five who are terminally ill.

Wilson tells WGIL there’s a relatively simple way the community can show support to local vets on their honor flight.

“My biggest thing is, I want our local community to be supporting our local veterans, as well as any veteran,” Wilson says. “Especially since we raised the money here, we have veterans going from here, Shave for the Brave is a non-profit here in Galesburg–we want our community to write a card.”

Write a message of thanks and put it in a box in locations like Galesburg Broadcasting Company’s front desk, Big Katz BBQ in Knoxville, any branch of Midwest Bank, or Galva Pharmacy.

On the honor flight back from D.C. the veterans will receive the letters of support and thanks from community members.

Wilson hopes to collect all cards by this Thursday.
