Knox president says new mascot will be announced next month

With the exception of some character that could have been lost to history centuries ago, Knox College is expected to announce a mascot to represent the school for the first time in their history.

President Teresa Amott made that announcement last night on Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL. She says the school will reveal the new character next month.

“The mascot will be revealed at our pumphandle opening event in September,” Amott says. “Students will then once they see what the mascot is, they are going to suggest names, they’ll vote on it and at homecoming there will be the mascot in costume, dancing around on the sidelines and will begin attending other athletic and campus events after that. We’re kind of excited about our new mascot to symbolize our new Prairie Fire pride.”

Knox, now known as the Prairie Fire, changed their name in the early 1990’s amidst controversy surrounding the original name; Old Siwash.

The pumphandle event will take place September 11 with homecoming October 14. Amott says funds from Knox’s booster club will pay for the mascot.

In other news, Amott praised other school initiatives. She says the upcoming Whitcomb Art building is on track and scheduled to be completed this Fall.

She also says 395 students are enrolled in the incoming Freshman class. That number is down a bit from last year. In an October 2015 interview, Amott said 417 students were enrolled in the class of 2019.
