Youth forum tackles barriers, shares ideas

The Galesburg Youth Commission’s “youth forum” was deemed a successful brainstorming activity.

That’s according to commission chairman Sue Cunningham who says 12 local agencies came together last Wednesday to share positive aspects of each agency, but also some concerns.

Cunningham tells WGIL that getting parents involved is among the biggest concerns agencies have.

“Whether it be we’re not reaching them through communication, whether it be they aren’t involved because they’re working two jobs at a time,” Cunningham says. “There’s a ton of programs out there for kids, but their just not able to get the kids there. Maybe it’s transportation that we can’t get them there, maybe it’s a cost factor that we can’t get them there.”

Cunningham says around 30 to 40 people from different groups were in attendance at the meeting. Some of those groups included Galesburg Parks and Recreation, the YMCA Solutions Program, Galesburg Workforce, Initiative for girls, Bridgeway, Teen Court and Discovery Depot.

The commission will now be setting plans to meet with youth in these programs to get feedback from them. The forums are intended to use gathered information as a way for the community to help agencies in need.
