Galesburg registration gets a makeover as first day of school nears

The day kids dread and parents have waited for is drawing close.

The first day of school is about two weeks away for most area schools.

Williamsfield, ROWVA and Galesburg school districts go first, kicking off the year on Aug. 16

District 205 is tweaking their registration this process, with all schools registering at the high school’s fieldhouse.

Superintendent for Finance and Operations Jennifer Hamm says this is an effort to streamline the process and make it more convenient for families that sometimes had to go several schools to register their children.

“We have a whole new setup where families are able to come in, move through different stations depending on what their needs are,” Hamm says. “If they are their just to drop off paperwork, we can facilitate that quickly.”

Galesburg High School students will be manning a children’s area where kids can color and watch movies while parents go through the registration process.

Hamm also says that the district is doing a series of off-site registration events.

Last Wednesday registration officials were at Lakeside Pool and tomorrow from 4-6 p.m. at the Knox County YMCA district reps will be on hand to assist with online registration.

Knoxville and United schools start the day after Galesburg on Aug 17 followed by A-Town on the 19.

Finally, Monmouth-Roseville first day is the 24.

Among the local colleges Sandburg begins classes on Aug. 22, followed the next day by Monmouth College.

Knox College’s schedule is the most dramatically different. Their first day isn’t until Sept. 12.

Correction: United School District’s first day of classes is Aug 17., not Aug. 24. This story has been corrected to include that information.
