Henderson man killed by freight train

A Henderson man is dead after being struck by a freight train.

The train’s operator reported seeing a subject on the tracks early Saturday morning just north of East South Street in Henderson when the man turned and ran toward the northbound train, according to a Knox County Sheriff’s Department news release.

The victim was identified as 23-year-old Alex Wignall of Henderson.

Knox County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene at approximately 12:40 a.m. Saturday.

First responders noted no sign of life and Knox County Coroner Mark Thomas pronounced Wignall dead at the scene.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Department says an investigation is ongoing.

 

Updated at 5 p.m. 6/7/16 to correct Alex Wignall’s age. WGIL originally reported Wignall was 24 years old. The correct age was 23. Additionally, the reported day the incident has been corrected from Sunday to Saturday.
