Galesburg Council approves Daly as assessor

Galesburg City Council approved the appointment of a new assessor last night.

Stephen Daly will officially take over for longtime Assessor Jim Lovell in August.

Lovell, who has served for more than 30 years as a city official, will retire in August ahead of when his term expires in December of 2017.

Daly will serve the remainder of Lovell’s term.

Little discussion took place on the measure last night, though Ward 6 Alderman Wayne Allen commended the appointment.

“I think the Council has done the right thing by filling the unexpired term for the city’s assessor tonight,” Allen said.

The vote passed 7-0-1 with Ward 7 Alderman Jeremy Karlin abstaining. Mayor John Pritchard and Township Supervisor Christine Winick cast votes alongside aldermen adding to the total.

In other news, Council also approved an amendment to the Class H liquor license policy which will allow the Candy Box Theatre to serve alcohol. The dinner theatre recently opened a permanent location on Seminary Street in connection with Chez Willy’s.

Additionally, a contract to sell excess water to the Village of Henderson was approved.

The sale is expected to bring in $21,000 in annual revenue. Council voted 5-1. Ward 3 Alderman Russell Fleming was the lone “no” vote.
