Run Galesburg Run breaks records for 5th anniversary

When over 723 runners stepped off just after 7 a.m. at yesterday’s Run Galesburg Run they found ideal conditions for the event.

65 degrees, cloudy with an intermittent cool breeze.

Coordinator Dave Dunn credits the 370 event volunteers for making the event run so smoothly. Dunn tells WGIL some even burned the midnight oil to get the downtown race ready.

“We actually had some people stay on the lot all night long so that we could set up electronic gear, ice machines and all of that kind of thing so that we felt we wouldn’t be as rushed in the morning,” Dunn said. “It worked out perfectly.”

Run Galesburg Run was only a stop for one participant in the Cottage Hospital Half Marathon who was next headed to Wyoming for a different challenge. That participant was Galesburg native Andrew Steck.

“We’re going to hunt at really high elevations,” Steck said “so I decided to start training, start running, start lifting really heavy so that when we get at that high altitude I want to be in the best shape I can be so I can get to where I need to be on the mountain range.”

Bryan Glass broke the tape first for the half-marathon breaking the event record with a time of a 1:12 in fact the top three finishers bested the old time.

Theresa Brokaw repeated in the women’s division with a time of 1:26.

Andrew Welch and Natalee Kern won the 5K in male and female divisions respectively.
