More than $10,000 reported stolen from El Jarochito restaurant

The owner of El Jarochito reported $10,200 stolen from his business Wednesday, the third theft reported at the restaurant and grocer in less than five years.

According to a police report, officers responded to the South Academy Street business shortly after the shop opened at 9 a.m.

The owner told police he forgot to lock the door before stepping out. When he returned around 9 a.m. to retrieve deposits to take to the bank, a cash bag was missing.

Security cameras attached to the building were not operational at the time of the theft.

Almost a year ago, police responded to reports of an armed gunman stealing about $16,500 from El Jarochito. A couple years before that, an estimated $8,000 was stolen from the business.

Galesburg Police Lt. Russ Idle says the department sees an uptick in burglaries as weather gets nicer. Since May 1, Galesburg police responded to reports of seven burglaries and 11 burglaries to motor vehicles.
