Monthly summer street fest First Fridays reopens tomorrow

For nearly a decade Galesburg residents have been invited to the Seminary Street Historic Commercial District on the first Friday of the summer months for beats, bites and booze.

This year’s series of First Fridays is set to kick off this Friday night.

Each month features a new musical act, alcohol distributor and children’s activitieswill, which will be on site as well the shops and eateries of Seminary being open.

Landmark Cafe owner and event coordinator Phil Dickinson says Landmark and Chez Willy’s will be vending on the street and the other businesses will be open through the night.

He tells WGIL that in June, Even Stevens will be the musical act and G&M Distributors will provide alcohol for those who bring a photo ID.

“It’s a good chance to get outdoors, take a deep breath and relax, visit with your neighbors and friends,” Dickinson says. “And it’s a no cost event to get in to.”

Dickinson believes the event started about eight years ago when a Seminary merchant attended another town’s First Friday and thought it was a good way for businesses to give back to the community.

“It fits well into our hectic summer schedules with running kids around and with everything else that we have to do to just kind of be able to stop, relax, visit, listen to some music, maybe eat some food,” Dickinson says.

The event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on the first Friday of July, August and September.
