Galesburg man arrested on second gun charge in one month

A Galesburg man accused of possession of a firearm by a felon, domestic battery and attacking police appeared in court today on a new gun charge after his arrest Sunday.

Police reports show officers arrested 29-year-old Trey J. Swain early Sunday morning on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. He was out on $10,000 bond for earlier gun and battery charges filed May 9.

The new charges stem from a weekend traffic stop near Simmons and Prairie streets. Police pulled over a vehicle driven by Swain that had no front license plate. Officers saw open containers of alcohol in the vehicle and conducted a field sobriety test.

Swain did not have signs of impairment, however, when police searched the vehicle they found a loaded handgun under the driver’s seat.

Judge Stephen Mathers appointed a public defender to the case. Swain is held at the Knox County jail on $50,000 bond awaiting his next court date at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
