Lowe’s tribute to employee makes safety fun

Yesterday on a bright Saturday morning families trekked out to the Lowe’s parking lot to pick up some safety tips.

Agencies and organizations from the area were there teaching kids different aspects of how to stay safe.

The Boy Scouts’ table was all about knife safety, whether it be handling or sharpening.

Boy Scout District Executive Allison Hupfer says that the event echoes one of the organization’s mottos, safety first.

“It’s all about properly training our volunteers for the safety of our youth,” Hupfer says. “First is youth protection. We want every single volunteer to have youth protection. So they know how to deal with youth at every age.”

Terry Boynton was one of the officers from the Galesburg Police Department on site.

Along with registering kids’ bikes with the city to make theft recovery easier, the GPD was teaching how to stay safe driving on two wheels.

“Watching out for cars, how to use their arms for turning signals and it’s just a lot of precautionary stuff to keep them from getting hit by cars,” Boynton says.

Safety is rarely so festive as it was on a day that was organized as a tribute to Lowe’s employee and member of the Oxford Fire Department, Marcia Atchinson who passed away last year.

Marcia’s husband Mark, also a volunteer firefighter with Oxford said that the day was a fitting tribute to the selfness nature of his wife.
