Galesburg man arrested on DUI charges following police pursuit

An early morning police chase that resulted in an accident led to the arrest of a Galesburg man today.

39-year-old Matthew Goodman has been charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding of a peace officer, driving on a revoked license and aggravated DUI–all class 4 felonies.

According to a Galesburg Police report, Goodman hit a cement parking block with his vehicle leaving a convenience store on Main St. shortly before 3 a.m.

During a pursuit between Brown Ave. and Beecher St., the suspect exceeded speeds of 70 miles per hour and drove into oncoming traffic, narrowly missing an accident with several parked cars.

The vehicle then crashed into a tree on Dudley St. where Goodman fled on foot and was apprehended.

Goodman appeared via video conference in Knox County Circuit Court this afternoon where Judge Stephen Mathers set bail at $50,000.

Assistant State’s Attorney Sabrina Stroops said Goodman’s license has been revoked twice before for pending felony DUI charges.

Mathers appointed a public defender in the case. Goodman’s next court date is set for May 25th at 11 a.m.
