Knox County awaits property taxes as finances wilt

The Knox County General Fund is over $1 million in the red a little under half way through the year.

Property tax revenue should be at 41.6 percent at this point in the year but it’s currently at 1.46 percent but that’s before the first installment of property taxes are collected

Treasurer Robin Davis says property tax bills are going out today and the first installments are due on June 22.

She says those dollars will distributed once over $1 million is collected which typically takes a few weeks, then the office does a disbursement every 30 days after.

“The problem is it may not be until the beginning of July until we get distributed, where as people are used to getting it in June,” Davis said. “Hopefully we’ll be at the halfway mark, but I don’t know.”

She did add the Equalized Assessed Value for property in the county was $3 million higher than expected.

In other business the committee approved a one percent increase every year for the next four for the Knox County Recorder and Coroner.

These salaries by statute have to be set 180 days before the positions take office and this is an election year for both posts.
In 2016 the County Coroner is scheduled to be paid $35,805 and the Recorder $51,730.
