Galesburg Council approves lead measures

Galesburg is moving forward with its lead prevention programming, as aldermen approved a number of items aimed at abatement last night.

$36,000 will be spent on a corrosion control study aimed at better treating lead in water. City Manager Todd Thompson told Council members the measure will look at a number of ways to improve.

“This would involve some testing in the lab as well as some testing of individual homes to further refine our program and determine if some of the different chemicals might be more beneficial,” Thompson said “or perhaps a different mixture of phosphate and orthophosphate might be more effective.”

In connection with the study, $11,600 was spent on purchasing the current phosphate inhibitor mixture, enough to last until results are rendered.

In other news, Council began the application process for a grant through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Roughly $5,000 was approved to start the process, though $112,500 will be required as a 25 percent match.

The funds would be used to replace lead service lines.

Thompson says the $450,000 in DCEO assistance would allow for the replacement of 150 to 200 lines.
