Slumberland opens for business in Galesburg

A furniture retailer that announced its plans to open more than a year ago in Galesburg has officially made its debut.

Slumberland Furniture on North Henderson Street opened for business Saturday.

That’s according to Store Manager Renee Beirwaltes who says customers have commented that they have never seen anything like the store in town before.

She says the initial response from the public has been great.

“Between Saturday and Sunday we had more than 1,000 people through the door,” Beirwaltes says.

Beirwaltes says Slumberland is utilizing around 30,000 sq. ft in the former EconoFoods space, while Dollar General and Big Lots remain as tenants. Slumberland customers can expect to see mattresses, leather products and of course furniture for sale.

“We also have a clearance center,” Beirwaltes adds. “That will be filled by this weekend.”

The company isn’t the only one benefiting from the opening. 13 full-time employees are currently on staff and Beirwaltes says local organizations who assist area families can expect to receive donations.

A formal grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony is set for May 20th at 4:30 p.m. in the store. Slumberland will donate 40 mattresses to Bridgeway families that day.

Around Christmastime, another 40 mattresses are expected be donated to an unnamed area charity.

Store hours Monday through Friday are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
