Your Weekend: Saturday fundraisers focused on trees and KCCDD

Two fundraisers being held this weekend hope to benefit two different but worthwhile causes.

On Saturday Knox College student environmental group KARES will be hosting their annual Earth Day Festival on campus.

Part of the festivities will include a Earth Day 5K, fun run and walk to raise money for Trees4Galesburg, a non-profit whose mission is to plant trees in Galesburg.

5K participants will start their trek on Turner Track at Trevor Field and will go through downtown Galesburg before finishing back at the track.

Sofia Tagkaloglou is Chair of Knox’s Student Sustainability Committee.

She tells WGIL that KARES designs this event to involve various organizations on campus as well as businesses from the community like Sitka Salmon Shares and En Season Restaurant.

“It’s something where we can involve the whole community,” Tagkaloglou says. “That’s really at the core of what Earth Day is about, you know, engaging everybody and spending time outside. We really do try to achieve that through the Earth Day Festival.”

KCCDD is also looking to raise money from their “Spring Break on Treasure Island” auction Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Director of Development Christina Smith says every year the event benefits a specific area that benefits their clients.

“This year our funds are designated toward covered transportation areas,” Smith says. “It’s so when our clients are getting off of our lift vehicles, they aren’t being hit by rain or snow or wind.”

Smith adds that tickets to the auction are now sold out.
