Knoxville moving forward with Knox County Fairgrounds waterline deal

In order to accommodate the future Love’s Travel Stop & Country Store, Knoxville plans to build a waterline to the property. The only problem: the line goes through the Knox County Fairgrounds.

Last night, Knoxville City Council unanimously approved making an offer to the Fairgrounds Board to use the property. Under the proposed easement, the fairgrounds — which sits on county property — would be allowed to pay the city rate for water and sewage, half the price currently paid.

Mayor Pro Tem Dennis Maurer tells WGIL he expects the deal to cost the city between $2,000 and $2,500 in direct revenue.

“But when you look at the tourist attraction that the county fairgrounds is, when people come to town, they spend their money when they’re here,” Maurer says. “And having Love’s sitting out there, of course that’s going to help their retail sales, it’s going to help their motor fuel sales, the hotel motel sales out in that area.”

Also approved last night was replacing the roof of the Old County Jail at a price of $7,180 and the roof of the Old County Courthouse for $19,000. Those contracts went to Armour Roofing and Locke’s Roofing & Siding, respectively.
