A Chicago man accused in the 2014 stabbing death of 49-year-old Melvin Buckner answered ready for trial today.

Christopher Croom faces four counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawful possession of weapons by a felon for his alleged involvement in the stabbing. Assistant Attorney General Jonathan M. McKay, who is prosecuting the case alongside State’s Attorney John Pepmeyer, says Croom’s jury trial will begin tomorrow at the earliest.

The 31-year-old suspect is defended by Chief Public Defender Dave Hansen and private attorney Chris Kanthak.

Also appearing today was 26-year-old Claude R. Shinall, who stands accused of killing a nursing home resident under the care of his former employer, Marigold Rehabilitation & Health Care.

Shinall, defended by Hansen and private attorney Elisa Nelson, faces four counts of first-degree murder, three counts of murder in the second degree and one count of involuntary manslaughter.

His case was continued to the June jury calendar.
