Tax filing deadline pushed back three days this year

Even if you haven’t yet filed state and federal taxes there will be three extra days to do so this year.

Michael Devine with the IRS’ media relations team tells WGIL the extension is due to a celebration in our nation’s capital.

“There is a federal law that says any holiday in the District of Columbia must be treated like a federal holiday for tax collection,” Devine says. “Even though the government will be open and the IRS will be taking questions from people, we can’t collect taxes on the 15th.”

Devine adds that if you make less than $62,000 a list of partnering tax software companies are available for free use in most cases on irs.gov.

“All of the information you need about your taxes is there,” Devine adds. “We’ve even got a free-file option.”

That applies to all federal returns but he says some software may charge for the state return.

He says that now about 90 percent of Americans file returns electronically and that by doing so residents can file quickly and have the piece of mind of knowing the IRS has received the return.

The IRS should send an electronic confirmation that they’ve received a return with in 24 hours of filing.

The official deadline is the 18th at midnight but Devine say it’s advised to file sooner.
