Experts: Expect ‘exceptionally bad spring allergy season’

The weather may not show it, but spring is upon us.

A Galesburg Cottage Hospital news release says experts are calling for an “exceptionally bad spring allergy season” this year.

As weather warms up, they say a “pollen superburst” is expected due to fluctuating winter weather patterns throughout the country.

Dr. Jeremy Carrier is board certified in family medicine. He says “It’s important to manage allergy symptoms early, before the effects take a toll on overall quality of life.”

He goes on to say that allergies can cause sinus swelling, which leads to chronic sinusitis. Additionally, those suffering from bad allergies may experience gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

The news release suggests people suffering from more than occasional sneezing or itchy eyes schedule a time with your primary care physician before allergy season hits in full.

Allergy medications should be applied at least one to two weeks ahead of allergy season.
