Kastle Kreme starts season in cold windy conditions

Kastle Kreme opened their windows to customers last week, kicking off the landmark ice cream stand’s 41st season.

Some customers have been showing up to reacquaint themselves with Kastle Kreme’s eats and treats since they reopened March 31.
Darren Davis who owns the shop with his family admits though that icy weather and ice cream aren’t exactly a great pairing.

“Chilly weather hurts us tremendously because we don’t have any inside seating or anything,” Davis says. “We’re a fair weather type of business.”

Davis says that last Thursday’s opening day saw a healthy amount of business but sales were relatively weak compared to last year’s opening weekend that had temps in the 70’s.

He says temperatures have barely gone over 50 degrees since this year’s kick off.

“Our business really depends on the weather,” Davis says. “If it’s nice out people come out. If not then they trickle in instead of coming in droves.”

This is the only second season since Darren bought Kastle Kreme with his wife Kris and hired their son Dalton Davis to oversee day-to-day operations.

Darren and Kris both work other full-time jobs and Dalton has a heavy load as Head Coach of Post 285 American Legion Baseball.

“So between the three of us we have to juggle our schedules around each other so at least one of us can be there,” Davis says.

Kastle Kreme’s April hours are Monday and Tuesday 3 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
