An Illinois Appellate prosecutor will be assisting in the case of a former nursing home employee accused of killing an elderly resident.

Charles M. Colburn was appointed today as special prosecutor. State’s Attorney John Pepmeyer says his office is “taking advantage of all available resources” by bringing in Colburn.

Claude R. Shinall faces four counts of first-degree murder, three counts of second-degree murder and one count of involuntary manslaughter.

The 26-year-old Galesburg man appeared today in Knox County Circuit Court where Judge Scott Shipplett set his case on the April 18 jury calendar.

Shinall is accused of killing 79-year-old Gene Farnsworth last year. Farnsworth was in the care of Marigold Rehabilitation and Health Care when Shinall, who was employed by the nursing home, is said to have attacked the elderly victim.

Autopsy reports determined Farnsworth died in November from “blunt force neck trauma” related to the alleged attack.

Shinall is represented by Chief Public Defender David Hansen and co-counsel Elisa Nelson.
