Knox County YMCA CEO Adam Sampson says the organization has reached about 80% of its goal needed to open an additional location in downtown Galesburg.

The Y announced late last year that they would open a 10,000 sq. ft. facility in the old Wells Fargo Building–a 24 hour facility. A goal of a little over $1 million was set. In an interview last December, Sampson told WGIL that the new facility was hoped to be up and running by June.

The Y is also in the middle of their six week support campaign to raise a goal of $115,000 to financially support these types of programs.

Sampson tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL, this campaign helps the Y continue to grow.

“I think we’re just at the beginning,” Sampson says. “The best is yet to come with this campaign and the work that we’re doing.”

Funds raised also go toward making memberships affordable for everyone.

Sampson says the impact the Y has across the community is proven by gifts to the campaign.

“Sometimes I get a $5 gift and that’s just as valuable as someone who would give me $50,000, because it’s not really about the dollars and cents a lot of times, it’s about story of what we’re doing and how we’re doing it,” Sampson adds.

Ultimately, he says the campaign isn’t about money, but getting the community engaged in what’s going on at the Y.

Membership is now up to 8,637 people which is nearly 3,000 more members than 4 years ago.
