Avon, Good Hope pick up the pieces after EF-2 tornado

March has not been a good month for Laura and Frank Craver.

Laura says that in 2006, the family experienced a devastating house fire at their 23rd Avenue residence, roughly two miles west of Avon. Almost 10 years later came another blow–losing nearly every building and possession on their farm property except oddly enough–their rebuilt home.

“Pretty much anything that was out there is gone,” Laura says. “Our camper is still actually I think wrapped around a pole there on the corner, livestock trailers, cattle sheds, machine sheds, tractors. Pretty much anything that was outside.”

The damage was caused by an EF-2 tornado which the National Weather Service says originated near the small McDonough County Village of Good Hope.

Via their Facebook page, Fulton County Emergency Management reported at least four homes were destroyed or damaged near Avon. NWS officials say the Good Hope area saw several farm residences destroyed. Still, no human injuries were reported as a result of last night’s storms.

Meanwhile, this afternoon at the Craver farm, family and friends were quick to lend a hand cleaning up.

“Both sides of our family, many neighbors and a bunch of my co-workers at Tompkins State Bank took the day off and their out here helping.”

Laura adds that six volunteers even helped last night until 2 a.m. this morning.
