205 approves health life safety work and new principal

The District 205 School Board approved a bundle of health life safety projects to be done over the summer at their meeting last night.

Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Jennifer Bloyd Hamm said bids came well under expectations for work that includes roof work at Thiel Gym and the Churchill South Classroom Wing, electrical panel work at the high school and asbestos abatement at GHS.

Asbestos abatement in the high school will be in the band and choir rooms, two art classrooms, the athletic office, two adjacent classrooms and the daycare room.

It was also approved to purchase a teaching evaluation software package at a cost of $19,000 and a subsequent $11,000 every year after.

Grimm tells WGIL that to say the district is unhappy with their current software would be an understatement.

“We have a lot of concerns with the current product,”Grimm says. “Not just from the Administrator use of the product but from the teacher side as well. Too many times the system is down, things are lost.”

The board also re-approved eight Knox Warren Special Ed paraprofessional RIFS at the advisement of the school’s attorney due to concerns over if the individuals had received the required 48 hours prior to the meeting where those cuts were made.

New cuts made final were the elimination of differentials to junior high teacher team leaders.

This was also the night when the board gave the ok to hire GAVC Director Jeff Houston as GHS Principal.

The board also continued discussion surrounding potential cuts to some district athletic coaches. A special meeting is expected to decide on those cuts later this month.
