Spirits remain high in Knoxville despite soggy St. Patrick’s Day parade

The luck of the Irish certainly wasn’t with the weather this afternoon in Knoxville.

Overcast skies and a steady drizzle likely kept some at home for today’s third annual St. Patrick’s Day parade, but many of those in attendance had smiles on their faces and seemed to enjoy the festivities.

“It was still fun and it’s a good thing we have an election going on this year,” Parade Organizer Karen Benjamin laughed. “You know, I think we didn’t have as big of a crowd as we wanted but it is March I guess.”

Benjamin adds that she hopes next year will be sunny.

Led from Knoxville High School by a dancing leprechaun, a handful of parade groups ranging from businesses, to church groups and candidates running for the 74th Legislative District made their way up and down Main street greeting citizens with candy.

The parade lasted a little over 30 minutes ending with a corned beef and cabbage dinner at the Knoxville Fire Station. All of the proceeds from the dinner went to the Knoxville Volunteer Fire Department.
