Mayor awards Galesburg youth for going extra mile

Galesburg High School freshmen Bryant J. Rucker has been awarded the Galesburg Youth Extra Effort Award.

The honor was bestowed on Rucker at City Hall prior to last night’s council meeting by Deputy Mayor Wayne Allen.

Rucker was nominated by Naomi Law for his effort to go the “extra mile” in all that he does.

Rucker tells WGIL that music is a portion of what keeps him busy, between playing trombone in the GHS band and church.

“I was a part of the youth choir at Church, the A.M.E Youth Choir, now I’m the local drummer there,” Rucker says. “They just make me feel comfortable at the church.”

Rucker is a member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, where the official proclamation awarding him says he is a “teacher and leader by example”.

He says both being a member of his church and the GHS band have given him a feeling of belonging.

“It just feels really good to be a part of something I really wanted to,” Rucker says.

He says that when he was younger moving from Chicago to Galesburg was difficult for him and going with his sister to church and the Boys & Girls Club helped him to meet people and started his community involvement.

High school graduation is still a few years but Rucker already is considering college and becoming a teacher “to help other kids achieve their goals”.
