Monmouth used furniture store expands into Galesburg

Peggy and John VanWassenhove will have owned “Second Chance Around”, a Monmouth used furniture and bedding shop for three years in September.

But in two weeks time Peggy says she plans on opening a location in Galesburg at 153 E. Main St., where just weeks ago Merle Norman cosmetics relocated to move across the street.

Peggy says at their second store the VanWassenhoves will continue to cater to people “who don’t have a lot to spend but want something nice.”

The man who owns the building on E. Main St. is who sold “Second Chance Around” to the Vanwassenhoves.

Peggy tells WGIL it was his prodding that made her and husband decide on the expansion.

“He talked to my husband about three weeks ago and said, ‘You know, I think you all need to branch out and have a small store in Galesburg,” VanWassenhove says.

He left them with an alternative.

“‘Because if you don’t I’m just going to go back into business,” VanWassenhove says. “‘I’m going to put furniture in there. I’m going to hire one of grandkids to run it and you’ll have competition.’ That was his was of saying come on, you need to do this.”

Peggy says she plans on opening Mar. 16.

She’ll mainly see to the Galesburg store while John will run the Monmouth location.

The regular business hours will be Monday through Friday 10-530 p.m. and Saturday 10-2:30p.m
