Candidates for 74th District highlight differences

All three of the Republicans vying for their party’s nomination in the race for Illinois’ 74th District share similar backgrounds.

Each one has an extensive agriculture background, promises to fight against regulations on business and has called for term limits.

DeSutter tells WGIL he believes what sets him apart is his leadership experience and as shown by his wide array of contacts that transverse

“I know the director of the Illinois Corn Growers Association on a first name basis,” DeSutter says. “I know the executive director of soybean association. People in the Illinois Farm Bureau I know on a first name basis. So I have a lot of leadership across the state. I think I have a vast web across the state.”

Wayne Saline who just picked up an endorsement from the Chicago Tribune says his eight years as Chairman of the Knox County Board’s Finance Committee are proof of his ability to balance budgets.

“I learned how to work across the aisle with the Democrats so we could have a balanced budget,” Saline says. “I was able to read the budget, find out where we had wasteful spending, make those hard decisions that we have to make, work with the Democrats to approve those cuts and balance the budget for nine straight years.”

Dan Swanson, who recently has been endorsed by former U.S. Representative of 17th District, Bobby Schilling has 27 years experience in the U.S. Army.

He’s proposing creating a collaborative agency to streamline veteran’s care.

“The first thing I want to do is build a collaborative agency with in the state government,” Swanson says. “I believe there’s 92 agencies in the state but only one agency is most concerned about veterans and that’s the Illinois Department of Veteran’s Affairs.”

The winner at the polls on Mar. 15 will go on to face Bill Butts, the unopposed Democratic candidate running for the 74th.
