205 Board to finalize position cuts, RIF’s tonight

Tonight is when the District 205 school board will vote on whether or not to finalize 63 position cuts and a number of other reductions in force from district spending.

Included in that number is 16 professionally licensed teachers.

Board members will be voting on names attached to individual positions that were approved for going forward in the elimination process at the Jan. 11 meeting.

Superintendent Ralph Grimm tells WGIL those in effected positions have been aware of the possible elimination of their jobs.

“We’ve talked to all of the people who are going to receive a RIF notice,”Grimm says. “The board action is the 24th.”

And that action would be the final step in the budget reduction process that began early January.

“They will receive the proper paperwork that details all of that following the board approval on the 24th,”Grimm adds.

Prior to voting there will be an opportunity for public testimony related to the slate of cuts.

The board will also have to decide tonight whether or not to eliminate stipends for 26 extra curricular activities across the district.

In other news, Ellen Spittell is expected to be seated as a board member following the votes.

Spittell is the former principal of Gale Elementary who was appointed by the 205 board to carry out the remainder of resigning member Rick Welty’s term that expires in April 2017.
