Pizza House celebrates 61 years on National Pizza Day

Local band Even Steven provided the musical entertainment for Pizza House’s 61st anniversary party yesterday.

The shop was packed for the celebration, which was timed with National Pizza Day — even State Rep. Don Moffitt made an appearance.

Dwayne Sperlin is co-owner and -operator of the East Simmons Street pizza shop. Ahead of the party, he told WGIL Pizza House has been a Galesburg staple since 1955, specializing in thin crust pie.

“We stick to that concept–real thin crust. It’s simple and easy and works for us.”

The Sperlins have run Pizza House for the past 16 years and, as Dwayne explains, business is good.

“We sell a ton of pizzas,” Sperlin says. “Friday night–we sell 300 to 400 pizzas outta here.”

The celebration yesterday included pizza and sweatshirt giveaways in addition to the live music.

“This is the first year we’ve done anything like this and it’s kind of nice. It’s national pizza day, we kind of timed it in together,” Sperlin adds.

Dwayne says about three billion pizzas are sold each year in the US.
