205 Board votes to move Technology Learning Center, discusses athletic cuts

The District 205 School Board last night approved moving the Technology Learning Center to the new Silas Willard elementary building.

The current building that houses the TLC will be raised at the same time crews are around this summer to demolish the old Silas.

The board was forced to take some kind action on the TLC due to the building having a number of issues including leaking and mold.

A discussion item that was taken up was cuts to assistant coaches for athletic teams across the district.

Board member Tianna Cervantez wanted it noted that athletic funds have already under gone significant cuts in the past 5 or 6 years.

“Student’s are going to concentrate in school if they have an activity that they are a part of,” Cervantez says. “If we end up cutting an assistant coach and that means that we no longer have a freshman team, then your in essence crippling the students in a couple of different ways.”

Board President Bob Lindstrom expressed he thinks coaching cuts can be made but he doesn’t want to eliminate any teams.

“I don’t want to have a varsity assistant just to have a varsity assistant. I don’t buy into that–the scouting thing and everything else. I want to see a coach for each team.”

The board also went into closed session to discuss applicants for the vacant seat left by departing member Rick Welty.
