Knoxville discusses lift station overhaul as Love’s Travel Stop becomes reality

Knoxville City Council is considering changes to the city’s sewage lift station to better accommodate the planned Love’s Travel Stop and Country Store.

Following last night’s council meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Dennis Maurer told WGIL three options are being considered for the lift station.

“One option being we just do nothing at all and continue using what’s out there until it falls flat on its face an repair it,” Maurer says. “The second option is, rehab the existing station out there. That would be new pumps, new control panel.”

The third option involves building a new lift station west of the current site. Early estimates call for a $135,00 price tag on option two and $550,000 for option three.

Neil Smith, senior engineer at Bruner, Cooper & Zuck, said the third option would grant future developments in the area better access to sewage.

A vote on one of the three options is planned during the Feb. 15 council meeting.

In other Love’s news, a tentative schedule was discussed for the truck stop’s annexation process.

City Attorney Rob McCoy recommended the Zoning Board of Appeals meet during the last week of February to address signage and zoning requirements for the property.

After that, council hopes to hold a public hearing ahead of the second regular meeting in March. At the March 21 meeting, aldermen would then vote to approve the final annexation of the Love’s property.
